City asked to come clean after O’Leary comments
Residents are demanding an immediate statement from the City Airport following controversial remarks made by Ryanair’s Michael O’Leary.

Mr O’Leary said that with a runway extension, the City Airport would become bigger than Belfast International Airport.

Fiona McKinley from Belfast City Airport Watch said: “This was a bold, unambiguous statement. The runway extension is central to Ryanair’s ambitions, and presumably to the ambitions of the new airport owners.

“So, let’s hear from the airport. Does the airport share Mr O’Leary’s views? Has it ambitions on becoming bigger than the International Airport with all that that entails? Or is Mr O’Leary flying solo on this one, upping the ante without keeping his airport partners up to speed?

O’Leary wants City to out-grow International Airport
Comments made by Michael O’Leary of Ryanair in a recent BBC interview, combined with reports this week that Belfast City Airport’s application to extend its runway is imminent have struck fear into the hearts of people living near Belfast City Airport. In the radio interview, Mr O’Leary set out the reasons why he wants a runway extension and made an altogether frightening prediction.

He told the Reporter: “Belfast city is now the fastest growing airport in the UK and if this growth keeps going, and clearly if the runway extension goes in place, I can see a future where Belfast City will be the bigger of the two Belfast airports”.

So, O’Leary’s real ambition is exposed. He wants the City Airport to be the dominant and busier airport.

And that means growing passenger numbers to more than 5 million per year. It means having open-ended operating hours….. just like Belfast International Airport. And it means operating to as many as 100 scheduled and charter destinations….. again, just like Belfast International.
