The dictionary definition of noise is ‘an over-loud or disturbing sound’ or ‘unwanted sound’. And if your home, school, garden, park or workplace is under a Belfast City Airport flightpath, then you probably know what it’s like.
For those who don’t, here’s the reason why this is becoming one of the biggest single issues affecting people’s homes the length of East and South Belfast and parts of North Down. - Large jets have been appearing with increasing frequency over these areas. Not just overflying at low altitude, but taking off and coming in to land over many thousands of homes, and probably in the region of between 20 and 30 schools.
- The problems of increased noise from large jets started in 2002, when BMI decided to relocate from Belfast International Airport. The airline brought Airbuses, ranging from the large A318 to one of the largest, the A321, into Belfast City Airport.
- Noise levels inevitably rose and many residents reported feeling “intimidated” and “scared” by both the noise and the sheer size of these large planes coming into land over them. People still make the same comments, even after five years of being exposed to this.
