Concerned about aircraft noise?

 

 It could get a lot worse if you don’t ACT NOW

​

George Best Belfast City Airport has submitted proposals to amend its Planning Agreement which would permit a massive increase in current noise levels. The Environment Minister is currently holding a public consultation on the proposals – please ACT NOW and REGISTER YOUR OBJECTION.

The airport is proposing a new noise allowance for itself which would permit:

   >> Noise levels far higher than when Ryanair operated previously from the airport with as many as:

​

  • 46,000 people in east and south Belfast, and in north Down affected by serious levels of aircraft noise

  • 26,000 people in east and south Belfast, and in north Down affected at a level deemed serious by the UK government

  • 9 primary and nursery schools in east and south Belfast affected at a noise level deemed serious by the government

  • 21 nursery, primary and secondary schools in east and south Belfast, and in Holywood affected at a noise level deemed serious by the World Health Organisation

   >> Belfast City Airport becoming one of the noisiest airports in the UK [1]

These figures aren’t our estimates – the estimates of numbers of people affected at certain levels of noise are included in the airport’s own submission to the Department of the Environment. The schools which would be affected are all listed in the airport’s own proposals which are available at: http://apps2.planningni.gov.uk/PlanningBCA/

Belfast City Airport Watch is an umbrella organisation of community groups and residents’ associations. Many of us use the City Airport and appreciate the economic benefits of airports. But we believe there has to be the right balance between the commercial interests of the airport, and the health and quality of life of local residents.

​

As greater Belfast is already served by one international airport just 30 minutes’ drive from the city, we don’t see the need for Belfast City Airport to expand its operations to the detriment of local residents’ health and quality of life. If you share our concerns, please use the opportunity given to you by the Environment Minister to make your views known.
